خُوَدٌ يَكونُ بِها القَليلُ يَمَسُّهُ
مِنfrom طَبعِهاher nature عَبَقاًa fragrance يَطيبُgrows sweeter وَيَكثُرُand grows more abundant
مِن طَبعِها عَبَقاً يَطيبُ وَيَكثُرُ
A maiden: the slightest scent upon her, touched
A tender young beauty: a little perfume upon her becomes, touched
by her nature, grows fragrant, sweet, and abundant.
by her nature, a fragrance that grows sweeter and more abundant.
شَكَرَgave thanks for الكَرامَةَthe kindness جِلدُهاher skin فَصَفاand so grew clear لَهُfor him
شَكَرَ الكَرامَةَ جِلدُها فَصَفا لَهُ
إِنَّindeed القَبيحَةَthe ugly woman جِلدُهاher skin لاnot يَشكُرُgives thanks
إِنَّ القَبيحَةَ جِلدُها لا يَشكُرُ
Her skin repaid noble care, becoming clear and pure for him;
Her skin gave thanks for the kindness, and so grew clear for him;
the ugly woman’s skin, indeed, gives no thanks.
