May rain water two abandoned camps with which I have no acquaintance,
where the Dārāt and the massive sandbanks meet.

despite your distance from us; may thunder peal over you.

I have finished with beautiful women, except for a love
for Dhalfāʾ whose end I have not yet reached.

The calamities of time have torn me from her,
and the vicissitudes of the nights, as a cloak is torn.
فَإِنso if تَدَعيyou leave نَجداNajd نَدَعهُwe leave it وَمِنand whoever بِهِis in it

If you leave Najd, we shall leave it and whoever is there;
and if you dwell in Najd—oh, how lovely is Najd!
فَإِنfor if كانَis يَومُthe day الوَعدِof the appointment أَدنىthe soonest لِقائِناour meeting
فَلاthen do not تَعذِلينيreproach me أَنfor أَقولَmy saying مَتىwhen الوَعدُthe appointment
For if the appointed day is the soonest we can meet,
then do not reproach me for asking, 'When is the appointment?'
إِذاwhen وَرَدَreached المِسواكُthe tooth-cleaning twig رَيّانَmoist بِالضُحىin the forenoon

When the moist tooth-cleaning twig reaches, in the forenoon,
her side teeth, their cold keeps chilling it.

And the softest of those who have touched the millstone spends the night
with saffron and rosy ambergris meeting at his soft nose-tip.
