ياO حَمَويهHamawayh اسمعlisten to ثَناءpraise صادقاًtruthful
يا حَمَويه اسمع ثَناء صادقاً
فيكabout you وماand not الصادقُthe truthful one كالكاذبِlike the liar
فيك وما الصادقُ كالكاذبِ
O Hamawayh, hear truthful praise
O Hamawiya, hear sincere praise
About you; the truthful man is not like the liar.
In you, and the sincere is not like the liar
ياO جالبَbringer of الخزيdisgrace علىupon نفسهِhimself
يا جالبَ الخزي على نفسهِ
بُعداًbanishment وسُحقاًand ruin لكَupon you منas a جَالبِbringer
بُعداً وسُحقاً لكَ من جَالبِ
O you who bring disgrace upon yourself,
O you who bring disgrace upon yourself
Banishment and ruin upon you, bringer of disgrace!
Away with you, cursed one who brings disgrace
إنْif فَخَرَboasted الناسُthe people بآبائهمof their fathers
إنْ فَخَرَ الناسُ بآبائهم
أتيتهمyou came to them بالعجَبِwith the marvel العَاجبِastonishing
أتيتهم بالعجَبِ العَاجبِ
If people boast of their fathers,
If people boast of their fathers
You come to them with an astonishing marvel:
You have brought them strange wonder
قلتyou said وأدغمتَand you suppressed أباًa father خَاملاًof no renown
قلت وأدغمتَ أباً خَاملاً
أناI ابنُson of أختthe sister of الحسنِal-Hasan الحَاجبِthe chamberlain
أنا ابنُ أخت الحسنِ الحَاجبِ
You say, suppressing a father of no renown:
I said, you claimed a sluggish father
“I am the son of al-Hasan the chamberlain’s sister.”
I am the nephew of Al-Hasan the chamberlain
