May an honor gladden the Commander of the Faithful,
for which he is bound to give thanks to God:

بدا فضلهُ إذ قامَ وهو خطيبُ
in that the heir apparent, Ma'mun of Hashim,
displayed his excellence as he stood delivering an address.

And when the people assailed him from every side

he assailed them with speech they heard in wonder;
even less would have amazed the listeners.

And when their ears took in what he brought,
hearts grew penitent and tender then.

Then the most eloquent preacher brought tears to people's eyes,
radiant, of Batha' lineage, nobly born.

Awe-inspiring, with dignified serenity upon him,
bold of heart, neither timid nor fearful.

Nor does his heart pound atop the pulpits,
when pounding seizes the heart of a nobleman.

When al-Ma'mun mounts the planks of a pulpit,
he has no equal in all the world.

The people dispersed from him, and he was their talk;
those far and near spoke of him.

إذاwhen وردتْcome يوماًone day عليهupon him خطوبُgrave affairs
Like the Commander of the Faithful in sound judgment,
when grave affairs one day come upon him.

If a root is sound in the veins of its mingled stock,
then its branches will be sound through its goodness.

So say to the Commander of the Faithful, through whom
Abd Allah advances, for he is well schooled:

كأن لم تغب عن بلدةٍ كان والياً

It is as though you had not left a town whose governor he was,
nor had your guiding hand been absent there.

He pursued what pleases you in every affair of his,
so his conduct is a figure dear to you.

Reward me for al-Ma'mun, and my son Muhammad too,
with bounty, for it is he whom you reward thereby.

The Imam's presence has indeed embraced them all, so each
has a share in what his hands have gathered.
