This world passes away; there is no immortality.

And whatever splendor you may see will perish.

Death has a watering place for each of us,

and he has no choice but to come and drink there.

Have you not seen spreading gray hair foretelling decay?

And indeed, tender youth does not return.

What destroyed the generations gone before will come to you,

so be prepared, for death is at hand.

I grieved for Muhammad, the chief judge,

so I shed my tears, my heart stricken with grief.

And I said, "When a grave matter grows obscure, who is there for us

to make it clear one day, now that you are gone?"

And al-Kisa'i's death after him distressed me,

and the wide-open earth nearly reeled beneath me.

So it made me oblivious to all life and pleasure,

and kept my eye awake while other eyes slept.

They were our two scholars; they perished and were carried off,

and in all creation they have no peer.

So my grief, whenever a thought crosses my heart

in remembrance of them both, stays fresh until death.
