Tell me, you pretender to the Banū Aṣmaʿ,
when were you ever of the noble family?

إذاif صحَّis genuine أصلُكَyour descent منfrom باهلِهْBāhila
And who are you? Are you anything but a man
of Bāhila—if your descent is genuine?
وَحَسْبُكَand enough for you لؤمُbaseness قبيلٍa tribe بهاin it
لمنfor whoever هيit فيin كفِّهِhis hand حاصِلَهْsecurely held
That tribe’s baseness is disgrace enough for you,
even for one who holds his claim to it firmly in hand.
فكيفso how لمنfor one who كانَwas ذاpossessed of دعوةٍa claim of descent
وكَفَّةُand the scale-pan of نسْبَتِهِhis lineage شائِلَهْraised high
How much worse for one with a dubious claim,
while his lineage’s scale-pan hangs high?

When he rises, he stumbles in a cloak,
and a drooping ear leads him along.

Ah, may every man who claims descent
from Aṣmaʿ be lost to his bereaved mother!

And the Bāhilī has upon his bread
an inscription forbidding it to its eater.
