في كل عيش غضارة أود

في كل عيش غضارة أود

والمرء قد يؤدي به الأبد

In every life of ease there is a flaw,

In all life are thorns I dislike,

and time may carry a man away.

And time may lead one to eternity.

فإذا يسرك يوم مغبطةٍ

فإذا يسرك يوم مغبطةٍ

فلقد يجيء بما كرهت غد

فلقد يجيء بما كرهت غد

So if a day of good fortune delights you,

So if one day you are blessed,

then tomorrow may well bring what you dislike.

Then surely what you hate comes tomorrow.

يومان في ذا ما تسر به

يومان في ذا ما تسر به

ويكون في هذا لك النكد

ويكون في هذا لك النكد

Two days: in one is what delights you,

Two days of this, what gladdens you,

and in the other, hardship is yours.

And in that, for you, is misery.
