If I fall ill, men exchange glad tidings
Men parade if Bishara falls ill,
of it—but whom among men has Time spared?
With that one, and which people has time spared?
وإنand indeed امرءاa man بالموتover death أصبحhas become شامتاًgloating at another's misfortune

And a man who has come to gloat over death
And if a man by death's made exultant,
will surely be its hostage one day, though life beguiles him.
He's pledged someday though youth's fooled him.
فإنso if متI die فاسددthen fill ماwhat سددتI filled ولاand do not تهنfalter
إذاwhen قيلit is said يوماًone day منwho لهاتكيمfor those (addressing you all; spelling unclear) الثغرthe breaches
So if I die, fill the breaches I filled, and do not falter
So if I die then shore up what you've shored, don't waver
when one day it is asked, 'Who will fill those breaches?'
If it's said one day "who'll man your mouth?"
وإلاand if not فلاthen do not let يغممكit grieve you أنيthat I am ابنthe son of حرةa free woman

صبورٌsteadfast لريبthrough the reversals of الدهرTime إنif فقدis lost الصبرpatience
And if not, do not grieve: I am the son of a free woman,
Or else my being no bondsman's son won't grieve you-
steadfast through Time's reversals when patience fails.
Patient with fate if patience I've lost.
