إذاif المرءa man لمnot يسعدfavors علىagainst الدهرtime جدهhis fortune
إذا المرء لم يسعد على الدهر جده
وإنand even if كانhe is ذاpossessed of عقلٍintelligence يقالhe is called مفندa fool
وإن كان ذا عقلٍ يقال مفند
If a man's fortune does not favor him against time,
If a man does not find fortune in this life
even if he is wise, he is called a fool.
Though he be wise, he is called confused
وياand oh ربmany a محظورrestricted عليهupon him رايتهI saw him
ويا رب محظور عليه رايته
تناولhe attained ماwhat أعياbaffled الذيthe one who هوhe أوحدunequaled
تناول ما أعيا الذي هو أوحد
And many a man under restriction have I seen
O Lord, if he is deprived of achieving his hopes
attain what baffled a man without equal.
He takes what tires him, for that is all he can do
