أقولI say لذيto a man of طربٍmirth ضاحكٍlaughing
إذاwhen ملtires ذوa man of النسكpiety منof نسكهhis piety
I say to a laughing man of mirth:
I say to the one with joyful mirth -
When a pious man tires of his piety,
If the ascetic tires of his ascetic ways -
دعabandon النسكpiety ويحكwoe to you لاdo not تبغهseek it
وعاونand help أخاكyour brother علىin فتكهhis recklessness
Abandon piety—woe to you!—do not seek it;
Leave asceticism, woe to you, do not seek it -
And help your brother in his recklessness.
And help your brother in his struggle -
ولاand do not تقعspeak ill الدهرever فيof صاحبa companion
وإنand even if أكثرواthey say much فيهagainst him بلrather زكهcommend him
And never speak ill of a companion,
Do not blame the times for a friend -
Even if they say much against him; rather, commend him.
Though they revile him, rather glorify him -
ولاand do not تبكينweep علىfor ناسكٍa devout worshipper
وإنand if ماتdies ذوa man of طربٍmirth فابكهthen weep for him
And do not weep for a devout worshipper;
Do not cry over an ascetic -
And if a man of mirth dies, then weep for him.
Though one of joyful mirth dies, weep for him -
وبكand weep for منwhomever وجدتyou find منamong العالمينmankind
فإنfor indeed الندامةregret فيin تركهneglecting him
And weep for whomever you find among mankind,
But weep for those in all the world -
For regret lies in leaving him unmourned.
Whom you find regretful for neglecting Him
