I stretched out my hand, not knowing,

with the cord of sincere friendship, toward al-Aʿlam.

So I found sweet what I tasted of his affection,

and said, “I have gained,” though I had gained nothing.

He has two dispositions; the nearer of them

is delicious in taste and flavor.

And in the other are ill temper and reserve—

the traits of an inarticulate mute.

So for a while you make him understand through reproach,

as a close, righteous Muslim friend would.

So he makes amends, then has a lapse

    back into his old disposition.
