وإذا تخيرت الرجال لصحبةٍ

فالعاقل البر السجية فاختر

فالعاقل البر السجية فاختر

And when you choose men for companionship,

When choosing companions of high moral worth

then choose the wise man of upright character.

Seek out men of virtue, wisdom and kind human birth

وإذا وزنتهم فاحكم وزنهم

وإذا وزنتهم فاحكم وزنهم

وأعرف سجاياهم بقلبٍ مبصر

وأعرف سجاياهم بقلبٍ مبصر

And when you weigh them, weigh them carefully,

Weigh well their character before calling them friend

and know their natures with a discerning heart.

Judge their true nature with insight that does not bend
