وصاحبين أذاع الدهر بينهما
بفرقةٍthrough separation واللياليand the nights تقطعsever القرناthe binding cord
بفرقةٍ والليالي تقطع القرنا
And two companions between whom Time spread
Two friends whom fate has torn apart,
separation—and nights sever the binding cord.
With nights that severed lifelong ties,
كاناthey both were خليلينtwo close friends لمnot تفرعsurmounted صفافتهماtheir firm bond (uncertain reading)
كانا خليلين لم تفرع صفافتهما
دخانsmoke دهرهماtheir time منfrom بعدafter ماthat أمناthey both felt secure
دخان دهرهما من بعد ما أمنا
They were close friends; their firm bond had not been surmounted
Were both as one in mind and heart,
by the smoke of their time, after they had felt secure.
Till worldly cares bred enmities.
