أبِلاَلُO Bilal إنّيindeed I رَابَنِيhas aroused my suspicion مِنin شأنِكمyour conduct
أبِلاَلُ إنّي رَابَنِي مِن شأنِكم
قَولٌspeech تُزَيِّينُهُyou embellish it وفِعلٌand a deed مُنكَرُreprehensible
قَولٌ تُزَيِّينُهُ وفِعلٌ مُنكَرُ
O Bilal, something in your conduct has aroused my suspicion:
Alas! tales of your affairs have saddened me,
words you embellish, and reprehensible deeds.
words adorned yet deeds ignoble and base.
مَالِيwhy is it that I أَرَاكَI see you إِذَاwhenever أَرَدتَّyou intend خيَانَةًbetrayal
مَالِي أَرَاكَ إِذَا أَرَدتَّ خيَانَةً
جَعَلَbegan السُجودprostration بِحُرِّon the front of وَجهِكَyour face يَظهرُto appear
جَعَلَ السُجود بِحُرِّ وَجهِكَ يَظهرُ
Why do I see you, whenever you intend betrayal,
Why is it when you desire to act treacherously,
with the mark of prostration beginning to show on your face,
you prostrate till your bright face hits the dust?
مُتَخَشَِّعاًfeigning humility طَبِناًshrewd لِكُلِّfor every عَظيمةٍgrave misdeed
مُتَخَشَِّعاً طَبِناً لِكُلِّ عَظيمةٍ
تَتلوyou recite القرانَthe Qur’an وأَنتَwhile you ذِئبٌa wolf أَغبَرُdust-gray
تَتلو القرانَ وأَنتَ ذِئبٌ أَغبَرُ
feigning humility, shrewd in every grave misdeed,
Feigning piety, obeying every mighty one,
reciting the Qur’an, though you are a dust-gray wolf?
reciting the Quran while a grey wolf within.
