مَcompletion of 'leprosy' جَلَّلَcovered مَاwhat حَازَencompassed منهُof him الوَرِيدَاthe jugular veins
مَ جَلَّلَ مَا حَازَ منهُ الوَرِيدَا
Now as for Bilal, leprosy indeed
As for Bilal, truly hardship
has covered all of him that his jugular veins encompass.
Has adorned all that starvation has left of him.
فَأَنقَعَso he soaked فِيin السَّمنِclarified butter أَوصَالَهُhis limbs
فَأَنقَعَ فِي السَّمنِ أَوصَالَهُ
كَمَاjust as أَنقَعَsoaked الآدِمُونَthose who eat bread with a relish الثريدَاtharid (bread steeped in broth)
كَمَا أَنقَعَ الآدِمُونَ الثريدَا
So he soaked his limbs in clarified butter,
So he dipped his limbs in butter
as those who use a relish soak tharid.
As leather-merchants dip leather in oil.
فأكسَدَso he made unsaleable سَمنَclarified butter تِجَارmerchants العِرَاIraq (first part)

قِcompletion of 'Iraq' علينَاto us فَأصبَحَso it became فينَاamong us كَسِيدَاunsaleable
قِ علينَا فَأصبَحَ فينَا كَسِيدَا
So he made the clarified butter of Iraq’s merchants unsaleable
Thus he oxidised the butter of perfume-merchants against us,
to us, and it went unsold among us.
And so he awoke among us like an honoured chieftain.
