لِكُلِّfor every زَمَانِseason الفتَىof a young man قَدindeed لَبِسworn (split verb)
I (completing the split verb) خيراًgood وشرًّاand evil وعُدماًand poverty وَمَالاand wealth
For every season of a young man's life, I have worn
good and evil, poverty and wealth.
فَلاَso not الفَقرُpoverty كُنتُI was لهto it ضَارِعاًsubmissive
وَلاَnor المَالُwealth أَظهَرَbrought out مِنِّيin me اختِبَالاfolly
So I was never submissive to poverty,
nor did wealth bring out any folly in me.
وَقَدand indeed طُفتُI roamed لِلمَالِin pursuit of wealth شَرقَthe east of البِلاَدِthe lands
وغَربيَّهَاand their west وَبَلوتُand I tested الرِّجَالاmen
I have roamed in pursuit of wealth through the lands' east
and their west, and put men to the test.
وزُرتُand I visited المُلُوكَkings وأهلَand people of النَّدىَgenerosity
أَزُولُI move إِلَىtoward ظِلِّهمtheir shade حَيثُwherever زَالاit moved
I have visited kings and men of generosity,
moving toward their shade wherever it moves.
فلوso if كُنتُI were مُمتَدِحاًoffering praise لِلنوَالِfor bounty
فَتًىa young man لاَمتَدَحتُI would surely praise عَليهِfor it بِلاَلاBilal
If, in hope of bounty, I were to praise
a man, I would surely praise Bilal for it.
وَلكنّنِيbut I لَستُam not مِمَّنamong those who يُرِيدُseek
بِمَدحِby praising الرجَالmen الكِرَامَthe noble السُّؤَالاbegging
But I am not one who seeks
to beg by praising noble men.
سَيَكفِيwill suffice الكَرِيمَa noble man إِخَاءُthe friendship of الكَرَيمِa noble man
ويقنَعُand he is content بِالوُدِّwith affection مِنهُfrom him نَوَالاas bounty
A noble man's friendship will suffice a noble man,
and he will be content with affection from him as bounty.
