وأَمَّاand as for بِلالٌBilal فَبِئسَhow wretched البِلاَلBilal
أرَانِيmay He show me بِهِin him اللهُGod داءًa disease عُضَالاincurable
As for Bilal, what a wretched Bilal!
May God show me an incurable disease in him!
فَلَوfor if أنَّهُthat he قدalready كَساهُclothed him الجُذَامُleprosy
فَجلَّلَهُthen shrouded him مِنfrom أَذَاهُits torment جِلاَلاa cloak
For if leprosy had clothed him,
And shrouded him in a cloak of its torment,
وَلَوand if قدalready جَرَىflowed فِيin عُروقthe veins of الشُّئُونِthe skull’s sutures
فأورثهthen gave him بَحَّةًhoarseness أَوسُعَالاor a cough
And had coursed through the veins along his skull’s seams,
Then left him with hoarseness or a cough,
لَعَادَhe would have returned بِلاَلٌBilal إِلىto أُمِّهِhis mother
مُقَفَّعَةًshriveled ومُخًّاand a brain خِبَالاderanged
Bilal would have returned to his mother,
Shriveled, with a deranged brain.
هُمَاthe two of them المعجِبَانِthe two marvels فَأَمَّاand as for العَجُوزُthe old woman
فَتُؤتَىso she is given النِسَاءwomen مَعاًtogether وَالرِّجَالاand men
They are a wondrous pair! As for the old woman,
She is given women and men alike.
وأماand as for بِلاَلٌBilal فذاكthen that is he الذيwho

يَمِيلُhe sways مَعَwith الشُّربdrinking حَيثُwherever استَمالاit lures
And as for Bilal, he is the one who
Sways with the drink wherever it draws him.
يَبِيتُhe spends the night يَمُصُّsucking عَتِيقَaged الشَرابِwine
كَمَصِّlike the sucking of الوَلِيدِthe infant يَخَافُhe fears الفِصَالاweaning
He spends the night sucking aged wine,
As an infant sucks, fearing weaning.
ويُصبحُand by morning he is مُضطَرِباًunsteady ناعِساًdrowsy
يُخَالُit is imagined مِنَfrom السُّكرِdrunkenness فِيهin him احوِلاَلاcross-eyedness
And in the morning he is unsteady and drowsy,
Seeming cross-eyed from drunkenness.
ويمشيand he walks يَزِيفُhe sways كمَشيlike the walking of النَّزِيفِa drunken man
كَأَنَّas though بِهِhe suffers from حِينَwhen يَمشِيhe walks كُسَالاlethargy
And he sways as he walks, like a drunken man,
As though stricken with lethargy when he walks.
