وَوَجديand my passion بِكُمfor you مُستَحكَمٌfirmly established وَتَذَكُّريand my remembrance
I wrote, with longing never leaving my heart,
and my passion for you is firmly rooted, as is my remembrance.
بِقُرطُبَةٍin Cordoba قَلبيmy heart وَجِسميand my body بِبَلدَةٍin a town

My heart is in Cordoba, my body in a town
where I am far from those I love and my companions.
سَقىmay He water اللَهُGod مِنfrom مُزنِrain clouds السَحابِthe clouds ثَرَّةًa copious shower
دِيارَكُمyour dwellings اللاتيwhich حَوَتsheltered كُلَّevery جُؤذُرِgazelle-fawn
May God pour a copious shower from rain-laden clouds
upon your dwellings, which sheltered every gazelle-fawn.

For love's sake, convey greetings to her
for whom I am mad with love until the day I am gathered for judgment.
لَئِنeven if غِبتُI am absent عَنهاfrom her فَالهَوىyet love غَيرُnot غائِبٍabsent
مُقيمٌabiding بِقَلبِin the heart of الهائِمِthe love-crazed lover المُتَفَطِّرِthe brokenhearted
Though I am absent from her, love is not absent;
it dwells in the heart of the love-crazed, brokenhearted lover.
كَأَنas though لَمnot أَبِتI spent the night فيin ثَوبِهاher garment طولَthe whole length of لَيلَةٍa night
إِلىuntil أَنthat بَداappeared وَجهُthe face of الصِباحِthe morning المُنَوِّرُthe radiant
As though I had not spent a whole night within her garment,
until the radiant face of morning appeared,
وَعانَقتُand I embraced غُصناًa bough فيهِon it رُمّانُpomegranates فِضَّةٍsilver
وَقَبَّلتُand I kissed ثَغراًa mouth ريقُهُits saliva ريقُsaliva سُكَّرِsugar
nor embraced a bough bearing silver pomegranates,
nor kissed a mouth whose saliva was sugar syrup.
أَأَنسىshall I forget? وَلاand not أَنسىI forget عِناقَكِembracing you خالِياًin private
وَضُمّيand my embrace وَنُقليand my dessert نَظمُa string of دُرٍّpearls وَجوهِرِand gems
Shall I forget? I shall not forget embracing you in private,
and holding you close, my dessert a string of pearls and gems.
فَواحَزَنيso alas for my sorrow أَنthat فَرَّقَparted الدَهرُtime بَينَناbetween us
وَكَدَّرَand clouded وَصلاًa union مِنكِwith you غَيرَnot مُكَدَّرِclouded
Alas, I grieve that time has parted us
and clouded a union with you that had been unclouded.
لَقَدindeed غُرِّرَتwas beguiled نَفسيmy soul بِحُبِّكَby love for you ضِلَّةًin folly
وَلَوand if عَلِمَتit had known عُقبىthe outcome of الهَوىlove لَمnot تُغَرَّرِbe beguiled
My soul was indeed beguiled by love for you, in folly;
and had it known love's outcome, it would not have been beguiled.
بَكَيتُI wept فَماbut not أَغنىavailed البُكاweeping عِندَamong صحبَتيmy companions

I wept, but weeping availed nothing among my companions,
and my longing is for a dark-eyed white gazelle of humankind.

Listen, O breeze of the wind, convey our greetings,
and describe all that the stranger endures, and tell of it.

to your namesake, and recite it to the family of Ja'far.”
