أَصبَحتُI have become وَاللَهِby God مَحسوداًenvied عَلىfor أَمَدٍa span of time
مِنَof الحَياةِlife قَصيرٍshort غَيرَnot مُمتَدِّprolonged
I have become, by God, envied for a span
I have become, by Allah's will, envied
Of life that is short and not prolonged.
For a short, non-extending life
حَتّىuntil بَقيتُI remained بِحَمدِwith praise to اللَهِGod فيamong خَلَفِa later generation
كَأَنَّنيas though I بَينَهُمamong them مِنout of خَشيَةِfear وَحديalone
Until, praise be to God, I was left among a later generation,
Until I remained, by Allah's grace, behind
As though, out of fear, I were alone among them.
As if I were among them in fear and solitude
وَماand not أُفارِقُI part from يَوماًon any day مَنwhomever أُفارِقُهُI part from him
إِلّاexcept that حَسِبتُI thought فراقيmy parting آخِرَthe last العَهدِmeeting
And never, on any day, do I part from anyone
And I never part from anyone
Without thinking my parting is the last farewell.
Except I count our parting as the last farewell
اِنظُرlook إِلَيَّat me إِذاwhen أُدرِجتُI am wrapped فيin كَفَنيmy shroud
وَاِنظُرand look إِلَيَّat me إِذاwhen أُدرِجتُI am laid فيin اللَحدِthe burial niche
Look at me when I am wrapped in my shroud,
Look at me when I am shrouded in my coffin
And look at me when I am laid in the grave's niche.
And look at me when I am laid in the grave
وَاِقعُدand sit قَليلاًa little while وَعايِنand observe مَنwho يُقيمُstays مَعيwith me
مِمَّنamong those who يُشَيُّعُescort نَعشيmy bier مِنamong ذَويthose possessing وُدّيmy affection
And sit a little while, and observe who stays with me
And sit a little, observing who will stay with me
Among those who escort my bier, among those I hold dear.
Of those who walk in my funeral of loved ones
هَيهاتَfar from it! كُلُّهُمall of them فيin شَأنِهِhis own affairs لعِبٌat play
يَرميhe casts التُرابَthe earth وَيَحثوهُand he scatters it by handfuls عَلىupon خَدّيmy cheek
Far from it! Each is at play, absorbed in his own affairs,
Alas, they are all busy with their own affairs
Casting earth and scattering it by handfuls upon my cheek.
Throwing dust and covering my cheeks
