أَغنىfreed from need أَباAbu (father of) الفَتحِal-Fath (victory) ماwhat قَدalready كانَhe was يَأمَلُهُhoping for it
مِنَof التَصانُعِostentation وَالتَشريفِand embellishment لِلدورِfor the houses
Abu al-Fath had no need of all he had hoped for—
ostentation and the embellishment of houses,
وَكُلُّand every عَرصٍplot of land وَقَرضٍand loan كانَhe used to يَجمَعُهُamass it
حَفيرَةٌa pit حُفِرَتwas dug بَينَamong المَقابيرِthe graves
and every plot and loan he used to amass:
a pit dug among the graves sufficed.
لَمnot يَألُهاstint on it القَومُthe people تَضييقاًmaking it narrow وَلاnor وَقَعَتstruck
فيهاin it الكَرازينُthe pickaxes إِلّاexcept بِعدَafter تَقديرِmeasuring
The people spared no effort to narrow it, nor did
the pickaxes strike within it except after measuring.
فَصارَso he became فيهاin it كَأَشقىlike the most wretched of العالَمينَall beings وَإِنeven though
لَفّوهُthey wrapped him بِالنَفحِin wafting fragrance فيin مِسكٍmusk وَكافورِand camphor
So there he became like the most wretched of all, even though
they wrapped him in fragrance, in musk and camphor.
ماnot العَرفُthe fragrance لَوif أَخبَروناthey told us بَعدَafter ثالِثَةٍa third night
إِلّاexcept كَعَرفِlike the scent of سَوّاهُanyone other than him فيin المَناخيرِthe nostrils
The fragrance, were they to tell us after the third night,
would be no different in the nostrils from anyone else's scent.
وَكانَand he had أَزمَعَresolved upon شَيئاًsomething لَمnot تَكُنhad سَبَقَتcome beforehand
بِهِconcerning it مِنَfrom اللَهِGod أَحكامُthe decrees المَقاديرِof fate
And he had resolved on something not previously ordained
by God's decrees of fate.
إِذاwhen أَرادَwills الإِلَهُGod الشَيءَthe thing كَوَّنَهُHe brings it into being
فَلَنthen will not يَضُرَّكَharm you فيهِin it سوءُbadness of تَدبيرِplanning
When God wills a thing, He brings it into being;
then poor planning will not harm you in it.
