ياO راجِياًone hoping for وُدَّaffection الغَوانيbeautiful women ضلَّةًin folly
فَفُؤادُهُand his heart كَلَفاًin infatuation بِهِنَّwith them مُوَكَّلُbound
O you who foolishly hope for beautiful women's love,
and whose heart is bound in passion to them:
لاdo not تكلفَنَّbecome infatuated بَوَصلِهِنَّwith union with them فَإِنَّماfor only الthe
كَلفُinfatuated المُحِبُّthe lover لَهُنَّof them مَنone who لاnot يَعقِلُhas sense
do not crave union with them; for the
infatuated lover of them is only one who lacks reason.
فَإِذاso when نَزَلتَyou alight فَإِنَّfor indeed غَيرَكَsomeone other than you نازِلٌalighting
ذاكَthat المَكانthe place وَفاعِلٌand doing ماwhat تَفعَلُyou do
For when you alight, another will alight
in that place, and do what you do.
أَوor مَنزِلٌa lodging المُجتازِthe wayfarer أَصبَحَhe was by morning غادِياًsetting out
عنهُfrom it وَيَنزِلُand lodges بَعدهُafter him مَنwhoever يَنزِلُlodges
Or a wayfarer's lodging: at dawn he sets out
from it, and another comes to lodge after him.
أَوor كَالثِمارِlike fruit مُباحَةًfreely available أَغصانُهاits branches
تَدنوdraw near لِأَوَّلِto the first مَنone who يَمُرُّpasses by فَتُؤكَلُso it is eaten
Or like fruit free for the taking, whose branches
bend toward the first passerby, and so it is eaten.
أَعطِgive الشَبيبَةَyouth لاno أَباfather لَكَfor you حَقَّهاits due
مِنهاfrom it فَإِنَّfor indeed نَعيمَهاits pleasures مُتَحَوِّلُpassing away
Give youth—may you have no father!—its rightful share
of it, for its pleasures are fleeting.
وَإِذاand when سُلِبتyou are stripped of ثِيابَهاits robes لَمnot تُنتَفَعُyou benefit
عِندَwith النِساءِwomen بِكُلِّfrom all ماthat which يُستَبذَلُis freely spent
And when you are stripped of its robes, nothing will avail you
with women, however much you spend.
