بَينَamid مَوجٍwaves كَالجِبالِlike mountains
Yahya said to me, as we found ourselves
amid waves like mountains,
وَتَوَلَّتناand took hold of us رِياحٌwinds
مِنfrom دَبورٍa west wind وَشَمالِand a north wind
and winds took hold of us
from the west and the north,

تَتcompletion of 'were severed' عُرىfastenings تِلكَthose الحِبالِropes

tearing both sails, while severed
were the fastenings of those ropes,

تِcompletion of 'death' إِلَيناtoward us عِنfrom حِيالِdirectly opposite
and the Angel of Death stretched
toward us from directly ahead,
فَرَأَيناand we saw المَوتَdeath رُأيَwith the sight of الthe
عَينِeye حالاًa moment بَعدَafter حالِa moment
and we saw death with our own
eyes, time after time:
لَمnot يَكُنwas لِلقَومِfor the people فيناin us
ياO رَفيقيmy companion رَأسُhead (forming 'capital') مالِmoney (forming 'capital')
“The people had in us,
my companion, no capital.”
وَسُلَيمىand Sulayma ذاتُpossessed of زُهدٍrenunciation

And Sulayma renounces
even the slightest union.
كُلَّماwhenever قُلتُI said صِلينيgrant me union
حاسَبَتنيshe settled accounts with me بِالخَيالِwith a dream-image
Whenever I said, “Grant me union,”
she paid me with a dream-image.
وَالكَرىand sleep قَدalready منِعَتهُhad been denied it

And sleep had been denied
my eye these last nights.

دافَعَتنيshe put me off بِمُحالِwith the impossible
And she knows better—so why
did she put me off with the impossible?
أَتُرانيdoes she think I أَقتَضيهاI demand from her
بَعدُafter this شَيئاًanything مِنof نَوالِfavor
Does she think I will ask her
for any further favor?
