وَمُراءٍ أَخَذَ النا

وَمُراءٍ أَخَذَ النا

سَ بِسَمتٍ وَقُطوبِ

سَ بِسَمتٍ وَقُطوبِ

And a hypocrite beguiled the peo-

Austerity has captured people

ple with solemn bearing and a frown,

With sternness and gravity,

وَخُشوعٍ يُشبِهُ السُق

وَخُشوعٍ يُشبِهُ السُق

مَ وَضَعفٍ في الدَبيبِ

مَ وَضَعفٍ في الدَبيبِ

and meekness resembling sick-

And humility resembling fasting,

ness, and weakness in his creeping gait.

And weakness in slyness.

قُلتُ هَل تَألَمُ شَيئاً

قُلتُ هَل تَألَمُ شَيئاً

قالَ أَثقالَ الذُنوبِ

قالَ أَثقالَ الذُنوبِ

I said, "Do you suffer from anything?"

I asked: "Does anything cause you pain?"

He said, "The burdens of sins."

He said: "The burden of sins."

قُلتُ لا تُعنَ بِشَيءٍ

قُلتُ لا تُعنَ بِشَيءٍ

أَنتَ في قالَبِ ذيبِ

أَنتَ في قالَبِ ذيبِ

I said, "Do not trouble yourself about anything;

I said: "You care not for anything.

you are cast in the mold of a wolf.

You are in an unfeeling mold."

إِنَّما تَبني عَلى الوَث

إِنَّما تَبني عَلى الوَث

بَةِ في حين الوُثوبِ

بَةِ في حين الوُثوبِ

You merely base your plans on the lea-

Indeed, you only thrive

p when the moment comes to spring.

On fraudulence in time of assault.

لَيسَ مَن يَخفى عَلَيهِ

لَيسَ مَن يَخفى عَلَيهِ

مِنكَ هَذا بِلَبيبِ

مِنكَ هَذا بِلَبيبِ

No one who fails to perceive

There is nothing hidden from Him

this in you is discerning."

About you, O sensible one.
