أَتاكَ أَبو حَفصٍ وَيَحيى بنُ مالِكٍ

أَتاكَ أَبو حَفصٍ وَيَحيى بنُ مالِكٍ

فَأَهلاً وَسَهلاً بِالوَغى وَالمَعامِعِ

فَأَهلاً وَسَهلاً بِالوَغى وَالمَعامِعِ

Abu Hafs and Yahya ibn Malik have come to you.

Abu Hafs and Yahya ibn Malik came to you,

So welcome to war and the turmoil of battle!

With calamities and afflictions they brought anew,

رَجالٌ إِذا صَبّوا عَلَيكَ شَهادَةً

رَجالٌ إِذا صَبّوا عَلَيكَ شَهادَةً

حَكَت فيكَ وَقعَ المُرهِقاتِ القَواطِعِ

حَكَت فيكَ وَقعَ المُرهِقاتِ القَواطِعِ

Men whose testimony, when they pour it upon you,

When men like them testify against you,

Strikes you like the blows of punishing, cleaving swords.

Their words strike you like piercing blades of doom,

أَقولُ لِديكي إِذ رَأَيتُ وُجوهَهُم

أَقولُ لِديكي إِذ رَأَيتُ وُجوهَهُم

تَعَزَّ فَقَد جاءَتكَ إِحدى الفَجائِعِ

تَعَزَّ فَقَد جاءَتكَ إِحدى الفَجائِعِ

I say to my rooster, on seeing their faces:

I say to you when I saw their faces,

"Console yourself, for one of the calamities has come upon you."

Grieve, for one of the calamities has come to you,

رَثى وَاِستَهَلَّت عِندَ ذاكَ دُموعُهُ

رَثى وَاِستَهَلَّت عِندَ ذاكَ دُموعُهُ

وَقالَ كَثيراً ما أَفاضوا مَدامِعي

وَقالَ كَثيراً ما أَفاضوا مَدامِعي

He lamented, and at that his tears streamed forth,

He wept and his tears poured forth then,

And said, "How often they have made my tears flow!"

And said much - how they made my tears flow!
