جاءَcame الغَزالُal-Ghazal بِحُسنِهِwith his good looks وَجَمالِهِand his beauty
The emir said, jesting in his speech:
The prince jokingly said in his speech:
"Al-Ghazal has come with his good looks and beauty."
The gazelle came with its beauty and charm.
أَينَwhere الجَمالُbeauty مِنin اِمرِئٍa man أَربىexceeded عَلىbeyond
مُتَعَدِّدِthe tally of التَسعينَninety مِنof أَحوالِهِhis years
Where is beauty in a man who has passed beyond
Where is beauty from a man who grew old
The tally of ninety years of his life?
Going through manifold ninety states of mind?
وَهَلand is الجَمالُbeauty لَهُhis الجَمالُbeauty مِنin اِمرِئٍa man
أَلقاهُcast him ريبُthe vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime فيinto أَغلالِهِits shackles
And can beauty be his—beauty in a man
Can there be beauty for someone whom the days
Whom time's vicissitudes have cast into its shackles,
Have shackled in their fetters then unbound,
وَأَعادَهُand turned him مِنfrom بَعدِafter جِدَّتِهِhis freshness بِلىًdecay
وَأَحالَand changed رَونَقَthe splendor of حالِهِhis state عنfrom حالِهِhis state
And turned him, after his freshness, into decay,
And after vigor made him weak instead,
And changed the splendor of his state from what it was?
Replaced the glory of his state with decline?
