قِفَاstop, you two بيwith me كيso that أُودعَهاI bid her farewell قليلاًbriefly
قبِيلَjust before البينparting إذas أَمسَىbecame طَويلاlong
Stop with me, you two, that I may bid her a brief farewell,
Stay a while so I may bid her farewell
Just before the parting, now grown long.
Before we part, for the night has grown long
رُوَيداًwait a little حيثُas أَطلبI seek أنto أَرَاهاI see her
فلاyet not القىI find لرُؤيتهاto see her سَبيلاa way
Wait a moment, as I seek to see her,
Gently, so I may hope to see her
Yet find no way to see her.
But there is no way for me to meet her
ويُبليهَاand wears her away الثَرَىthe earth والهفَoh, the anguish of نفسيmy soul
وتغدوand she becomes طيَّهُwithin its folds رَسماًa trace محيلاfaded
And the earth wears her away—oh, my soul's anguish!
And sorrow wears me down and my soul
And within its folds she becomes a faded trace.
Her traces fade into something long gone
وأُمسيand I become بعدَهاafter her كلّيall of me قلوبٌhearts
تذوبُmelt وأعينٌand eyes تَجريflow سُيولاin torrents
And after her, I am nothing but hearts
After her I am hearts wholly consumed
That melt, and eyes that stream in torrents.
Melting away and eyes pouring streams
وَهيهاتِand far beyond reach الوداعُfarewell وقدand already أَتاهاَcame to her
رسولُthe messenger البَينِof parting يخطفُهَاsnatches her away عَجُولاhasty
And farewell is beyond reach, for to her has come
Alas, farewell when the messenger came
The messenger of parting, snatching her away in haste.
Of parting, rushing to take her away

Two years passed before the time came for me
Two years passed until it was time
To see you—but news of your death came instead.
For me to see you though it was news of your death
قَضَيتِyou died بغُربةٍaway from home عنيfrom me ولَكنand yet

You died away from home and far from me, yet
You spent estranged from me but
My heart was there, a lodger with you.
My heart was with you there, a lodger

وَبعدكِand after you لاَnot أَرَىI see صبراًpatience جميلاbeautiful
I am told, 'Be patient with beautiful patience,'
It’s said, “Patience, beautiful patience”
Yet after you, I find no patience beautiful.
But without you, I see no beautiful patience

بفقدكِthrough losing you قدindeed غَدَاbecame شطراًa half عَليلاailing
Sister of my soul—rather, half of a heart
Sister of my sadness, my heart’s half
That, at your loss, has become an ailing half.
With your loss, has become frail and ill
ومَنand who أحرَىmore entitled بطولto prolonged الحزنsorrow منيthan I

وأَجرَىand sheds more freely فيin الأَسَىgrief دمعاًtears هَطُولاtorrential
And who has greater claim to lasting sorrow than I,
Who else has more right to prolonged grief
And sheds more torrential tears in grief?
And to let sorrow's tears fall in floods?

When the mourning women lament and wail,
When the bereaved women weep and wail
I am the one most entitled to voice a lament.
I have the greatest right to cry and bewail
فقدتُكِI lost you فيin الصِبَاyouth كالغصنِlike a branch رطباًtender
تميلُsways بهِwith it الصَباthe east wind هبَّتblew أَصيلاtoward evening
I lost you in youth, like a tender branch
I lost you in youth, while still moist like a sapling
Swayed by the east wind blowing toward evening.
Swaying as the breeze blew over the pinnacle
كغصنٍlike a branch مثمرٍfruit-bearing لمَّاwhen جَنَينَاwe gathered

Like a fruit-bearing branch: when we gathered
A fruitful branch whose fruits we picked
Its fruit, it withered and sought to fade.
Then withered and longed for revival

قُبَيلَjust before رضَاعِهِhis suckling أَمسَىbecame ثكُولاbereaved
You left us a child at mid-month,
You left us a child halfway through the month
Who became bereaved just before he was to suckle.
Soon after nursing, he was destitute

Like a sun that accompanied a moon; then, when
Like a sun accompanying the moon but when
It became full, she sought to set away from it.
It rose full, she deserted its setting
عَروسٌa bride بُدِّلَتwas made to exchange بالموتِfor death بَعلاًa husband
وسآءَand dreadful was الموتُdeath واأَسفىoh, my sorrow الحليلاas a spouse
A bride given death in place of a husband;
A bride changed for death a husband
And death was a dreadful spouse—oh, my sorrow!
Death was miserable and the condition woeful
وقَدand indeed صَارَتbecame لهاfor her الأكفانthe shrouds لبساًclothing
ولكنand yet لاnot تجرُّshe drags لهاof them ذيولاtrains
And shrouds have become her clothing,
The shroud has become her clothes
Yet she trails no trains behind her.
But has no train flowing behind her

وهاجَتand stirred فيin جَوانحهِhis breast الغليلاburning anguish
And she left the hale man sick at heart,
She left the healthy and a heart sick with ardor
And stirred burning anguish within his breast.
With passions raging without a way to assuage them

فَقَدthen indeed نَالَتshe gained بهِthrough it أَجراًa reward جزيلاbountiful
Though her life was but a short span,
If her life was very brief
She gained through it a bountiful reward.
She gained abundant reward

And though she left a Nile behind in Egypt,
If she left the Nile of Egypt
In heaven she beheld bounty and a Nile.
She attained Niles and Niles in the most high

There she enjoyed a blissful life,
There she enjoys pleasant living
Through which she forgets the dwellings and the lodger.
Forgetting homes and lodgings

نعدُّwe deem الصبرَpatience أَمراًa thing مُستَحيلاimpossible
And she left us grieving beside her;
And left us in sorrows beside which
We deem patience an impossible thing.
Patience seems impossible
وَهَيهَاتِand far beyond reach التَصبُّرstriving for patience والتَّسليand consolation
علىdespite أَنَّthe fact that الرَدَىdeath أَدنىnearer حُصولاto attainment
And far beyond reach are patient endurance and consolation,
Alas, to show patience and solace
Though death is nearer at hand.
When fate comes so quickly
وَماand there is no للموتِfor death غيرُother than الموتِdeath مُسلٍa consoler
إذاwhen أَعياكَdefeats you حزنُكَyour grief أنto يَزولاfade away
And only death can console for death,
And death only brings death relief
When your grief defies your efforts to dispel it.
When grief overwhelms you until it passes
