وزادتand have increased دموعtears of البينseparation فيin عينَيmy two eyes الشَكرَىbrimming with tears
Sorrows have multiplied in my burning liver,
Sorrows have multiplied in my aching heart,
and tears of separation have swelled in my brimming eyes.
And tears of separation have increased in my tearful eyes.

بطيّwithin the folds of فؤَاديmy heart منfrom نوائبهاtheir calamities جمراembers
The nights have oppressed my frailty and kindled
Nights have passed over my weakness, igniting
within my heart's folds, embers from their calamities.
The embers of grief in the folds of my heart.
وقدand indeed أَلَّمتنيhave pained me الحادثاتcalamities بصَرفهاwith their reversals
كماjust as أَلَّمتthey pained خنسآءَal-Khansa إذwhen فقدتshe lost صخراSakhr
And calamities have pained me with their reversals,
Events have taught me bitterness in their twists,
as they pained al-Khansa when she lost Sakhr.
Just as they taught Khonasa when she lost Sakhr.
وهيهاتand far from it! ماnot الخنسآءُal-Khansa عندbeside بليَّتيmy calamity
بشيءٍanything وصخرٌand Sakhr صرتI have come to أحسبهًregard him صخراa rock
But far from it! Beside my calamity, al-Khansa
But alas, Khonasa's plight was nothing,
is nothing; and Sakhr I now regard as a mere rock.
Compared to my sorrow, and Sakhr whom I thought a boulder.
فقدتُI lost أبيmy father ماليwhat have I to do وللعيشand with life بعدهُafter him
فموتيso my death منthan عيشيmy life غداhas become بعدهُafter him أحرَىmore fitting
I have lost my father—what have I to do with life after him?
I lost my father, my wealth, and after his loss,
For after him, my death has become more fitting than my life.
My death became dearer than life without him.

The life of one sorrowful at heart is death, and his death
The life of a grieving heart is death, and its death
is life, in which he finds supreme rest.
Is the great rest it meets.

So cursed be the day when Time sundered our union
Cursed is the day that separated us,
and heaped its calamities in my heart, one after another.
And gathered its calamities in my heart.

Whose days you wept only for joy?

O my weary body, die of grief
for the death of him in whose lap you lived a lifetime.
For the death of him in whose lap you lived a lifetime.

Joy is forbidden to my heart after him.

How can I be happy when he lies in the grave?

I shall lament him all my life, for he
I will weep for him as long as I live, for he
deserves an age of tears for his loss.
Deserves to be mourned forevermore.

My day, like my night, is black and brings me no delight;
My days and nights are bleak and bring no comfort,
and my night is like my day, in sleeplessness and remembrance.
Filled only with sleeplessness and memories.

And would that all of me were livers bereft of patience!
Would that I were all hearts losing patience!

He is gone, leaving behind only darkness and caves.

O ocean of virtue, once full of pearls -
at your loss, the sea nearly lost its pearls.
For your loss, the ocean almost lost all pearls.

Turned the night of ignorance with their light into dawn.

O noble master, orphaned by your death,

As is orphaned rhythm, prose and verse.

Poetry will lament you for an age, and how often
Poetry will lament you forever,
it thrilled through you and soared above the sphere of Sirius!
For at your verse it trembled and reached for the stars.

O pride of your people when glory is recalled.

You have indeed leaned, O pillar of learning, and so close were
You have vanished, O pillar of knowledge, and your papers
its pages, from overwhelming grief, to erasing the ink.
Are fading, consumed by the excess of ink.

You have set, O sun and moon of science,
so everyone now laments the sun and the full moon.
And all lament the absent sun and moon.

And you have choked on death's wine in a drunken stupor,
You sipped death’s wine sweetly,
so here I am, still drunk on the wine of grief.
While I remain drunk on the wine of grief.

Your soil was never devoid of bounty for mankind.

Upon him, God's Peace, as long as the east wind blows,
and as long as the tongues of humankind speak of him again and again.
And as long as people repeat his remembrance.
