    إِنَّ هذي الحيوةَ طيفُ خيالِ

    Provision the soul before saddling for the journey;

indeed, this life is a phantom of fancy.

And take piety with you as a lamp before you,

to dispel the darkness of those nights.

Indeed, doing good to others is a worthier

    treasure than hoards of wealth.

    إنها دارُ وقفةٍ وارتحالِ

    This world is no lasting dwelling;

it is a place for pausing and departing.

And whoever lives in time has no escape

    from changing fortunes.

And life in this world is a road that leads

toward the majestic abode of eternity.

So whoever chooses the shortest of its paths

outstrips whoever chooses a lengthy course,

like the gifted child who died so soon

and departed ahead of men in their middle years.

That was a child in whom God had placed

the discernment of those who had reached full maturity.

The water of life dried up in his body when

the fire of his heart flared into flame.

O crescent that already held a full moon's light,

what if your shimmering light had grown full!

The eclipse came upon you at the month's beginning,

yet we have never known a crescent's eclipse.

If your bed has ever lain empty

of you, the heart is not empty of you.

Or if you have decayed, grief within the folds

of the breast remains unfaded throughout our lives.

Wipe away your tears, O father of the child, for this

is what your exalted Lord's judgment decreed.

Time acted swiftly, reclaiming its gift,

and it feels no shame in taking back its bounty.

Thus the gifted child hastens earnestly ahead

    to bliss prepared for children.

So one like him is mourned and wept for,

not for a dirham or a mithqal.
