O you who deem your world an abode of permanence,

Cease your toil, for that is the vilest abode.

Souls find no rest in it, nor do you see

A heart without sorrow or troubles.

A world of delusion: whenever time grows long,

Delusion grows long through its beguiling guile.

It betrayed a prelate who, upon his throne,

Was shepherd of shepherds and master of prelates.

O prelate, whose station is exalted,

After losing you, is there anything but flowing tears?

By God, what a day was yours among humankind! For it

Has left us sorrow through all the ages.

O full moon, vanished from us into the dust,

Such was never the custom of moons.

The spheres on high envied him and yearned

For him to lie hidden within their folds.

Grief for you has nearly split the rock that

Once would soften at your warning.

Alas! Whom have you left after you as a shepherd

To tend the flock in ways that please the Creator?

Who is there for the pulpits, the sanctuaries, and wisdom,

And difficult questions and the hidden depths of secrets?

No wonder if eyes have wept for you out of

Grief, and overflowed with blood in torrents.

For indeed, churches you founded have wept for you

In the farthest cities and lands.

So upon your dust be a greeting, fragrant with

The scents of lavender and the sweetest flowers.

And may the dew grace your resting place, crowning

Its white surfaces in the hours before dawn.

You have left the abode of transience, to dwell in

The abode of eternity, and won the finest company.

No chronogram marked your share in bliss

Except “the mercies of your Lord, the All-Forgiving.”
