When will the days let my tears stop flowing,

And my tormented heart cease spending nights on embers?

And will they ever make me forget the calamities gone by,

At which hard, unyielding rock would melt?

God will not let me forget—and how could I, when in my blood

Khansa's sorrows for Sakhr have mingled?

My heart has grown used to sorrow since its earliest years,

And has never known the taste of joy in life.

Oh, would that all of me were tongues composing elegies,

To voice the sorrows of a heart bereft of patience.

I find death sweeter than a sorrowful life

Whose nights pass, bitterer than aloes.

Though the tears from my eyes dry for a moment,

Yet in my heart, flowing tears run on forever.

Parting's snatcher took a pearl from me,

Of wondrous beauty, putting the radiant star to shame.

Treacherous time has slain her—would that

It had slain me instead of her; but it did the reverse.

You departed from me, O Rachel, so swiftly,

And kindled fires of ghada wood within my breast.

So, O branches of the ban tree, lament with me for

A little branch the hand of parting met and broke.

And, O flowers, wither; and, O stars, set,

For her who was like the garden's flowers and like the stars.

And, O clouds whose tears flow like pearls,

Let them flow upon a grave that has become the pearl's shell.

Upon the grave of her who was the branch's tender shoot,

And among the stars of the spheres held the full moon's station,

And in my suffering heart held the place of its innermost core—

Though she has seared it with grief—if only she knew.

And yours is not just one grave, for our hearts

Are graves holding likenesses of your form in the tomb.

So may clouds never cease to water your earth,

Like the clouds of my tears streaming down my breast.

And may the doves never cease to weep in lamentation

Over it, like my lament in the late afternoons and at dawn.

And may mercies never cease to water her soul,

As her tomb is watered by the rain-laden cloud,

So that, in the heights and on earth, she has an abode

Lavishly watered with showers of mercy and rain.
