لِيُنبِّهto rouse الغرقانَthe one submerged فيin سِنَةdrowsiness الكَرَىsleep
Death's herald has called out among humankind,
The caller to death in the wilderness has called
To rouse the one submerged in the drowsiness of sleep.
To awaken those drowning in the sleep of old age.
سكرَgrew drunk الجميعُeveryone بحبِّwith love of ذيthis الدنياworld فماand not
فاقَsobered امرُؤٌa person منهمamong them ولاnor أحدٌanyone صحاawakened
All grew drunk with love of this world, and not
All are intoxicated with love of this lowly life, so none
One among them sobered, nor did anyone awaken.
Of them awakened or became sober.
فيin كلِّevery يومٍday قامَrose ميتٌa dead person مُنذِرٌgiving warning
يدعوcalls وماand there is no منany سامعٍhearer ذاكthat الدُّعاcall
Each day a dead person rises to warn,
Each day a warner arose from the dead
Calling, yet no one hears that call.
Calling out, but none would heed his call.
يشقىtoils ويبنيand builds المرءُa person طولَthroughout حياتهِhis life
والموتُand death ياتيcomes هادماًdemolishing ماwhat قدalready بنىhe built
Man toils and builds throughout his life,
Man suffers and builds throughout his life,
And death comes, demolishing what he has built.
Yet death comes demolishing all he built.

O face of Katiba, for which fate decreed
O face of she who wrote down the decree,
That its beauty be erased one day—and it was erased.
Her beauty was erased by deletion one day.

Yesterday we saw it as a perfect full moon;
Yesterday we saw her a full moon,
And today we would be content with a crescent, yet see none.
Today we are content with a crescent, nothing more.

O daughter of Musa, God has called you from
O daughter of Moses, God called you
The Mount of Majesty, as He called him in days gone by.
From Mount Sinai just as He called him before.

Musa split a surging sea with his staff,
Moses split the raging sea with his staff,
And we see you have split hearts without a staff.
While you split hearts without a staff.

You were before us, one of the people of earth;
You were ahead of some people of the earth,
And today you have become one of the people of heaven.
And today you have become one of the people of the sky.

Death has sunk her arrows into you,
Death has mercilessly pierced its arrows in you
Unjustly, and has shown no pity for that youth.
Wrongfully, without pity for that child.

O pearl, whose like Time was loath to give,
O pearl—time was stingy with your like—
You were lost, and every eye poured forth tears.
Lost, so every eye wept with tears.

Learning and languages wept in sorrow,
Friends and languages grieved,
On the day of parting, with noble virtues and piety.
On the day of parting, from virtues and piety.

O you—if the women of our land were reckoned
O you who, if the women of our country
A necklace, then you are its peerless jewel among women.
Were considered a necklace, you’d be its precious pearl.

Time weeps for your youth, lamenting
Virtues steeped in the essences of fragrance.
A character imbued with its most delightful spirit.

Souls would revive through it, but fate outstripped us.
That souls would live again through you, but fate preceded.

Though you have vanished from sight, still
If you are absent from eyes, in fact
Your likeness remains within the heart's folds.
You are present fully in imagination.

O parting, you have closed a noble woman's eye,
O Ibn Qudamah, you have closed the eye of a generous one
Which courtesy and modesty used to close.
Whose modesty and shame used to close it.

Whatever virtues you sought in her,
However much virtue you sought from her
You found all the game in the wild ass's belly.
You found all good game in its bounds.

Alas for the midmorning sun! Alas for
Alas for the sun of morn, alas for
The full moon of night! Alas for the bough of the sand dune!
The full moon of dusk, alas for the branch of softness.

Alas for the face crowned with splendor!
Alas for the face crowned with beauty.

Alas for my grief which is of no use to me,

Grief I repeat though it last an age.

So I shall surely weep for you as long as I live; and if I die,
So weep not for me while I live, and if I die
Then let my bones weep for you beneath the earth.
Then let the greatest weeping for me be beneath the soil.
