O delight of my eyes, I cannot bear to be without you.

How can there be solace while the heart's fire blazes?

And how can I find solace, when she has departed from me today—

Asma—leaving tears streaming from my eyes?

So, my eyes, pour forth tears, that perhaps

You may ease some of what lies hidden in the heart.

And aid the grieving one's soul, that perhaps you may

Quench the blaze of a heart nearly split apart.

O ember of grief, will you not leave my liver

For one day without wounds? Its freshness has already faded.

You grew up with me for nine years, and there came

One whom neither old age nor youth can hinder.

How short that life was—ah, my sorrow!

Like a flower scattering at the breaking of dawn.

Oh, my soul's anguish for days that passed in haste,

Like a dream that vanished, leaving neither presence nor trace.

Alas for the long night I spent sleepless,

As though it had neither morning nor the hour before dawn.

Once I feared for my sight because of my tears,

And today, tears and sight alike mean little to me.

So I shall surely weep for you as long as a collared dove mourns,

And as long as the moon travels by night through the heights of its spheres.
