I persisted, ever obstinate in remembrance,

Over a sorrow that has so often stirred sobbing,

And over account after account from Khadija.

For my waiting has grown long, O Khadija,

In the heart of the two Meccas, hoping

To see your account come to fruition,

Through what you told us of a priest's words,

One of the monks—I would hate to see him in need—

That Muhammad will hold sway among us,

And overcome whoever disputes with him,

And reveal a light's radiance throughout the lands,

With which he steadies creation, lest it surge in turmoil.

So his adversary will suffer loss at my hands,

And whoever makes peace with him will find success.

So, would that I, when that comes to pass,

Might witness it and be their first to enter—

    Entering what Quraysh has hated,

Even if it clamors loudly in its Mecca.

Through what they all have hated, I hope

To ascend to the Lord of the Throne, if they sink low.

And is baseness anything but disbelief

In the one chosen by Him who raised the constellations?

Then, if they live on and I live on, events will come

Over which the unbelievers will raise a loud outcry.

And if I perish, every young man will meet

From fate's decrees a grievous, deadly calamity.
