O men, behold the vicissitudes of time and fate!

Nothing God has decreed can ever be changed.

Khadija came, calling me to tell her—

though we possess no tidings of the hidden unseen.

She came to question me about him, that I might tell her

of a matter I believe will come upon people in latter times.

She told me of a matter I had heard of before,

in ages past, in the ancient reaches of time:

that Ahmad will be visited and told the news

by Gabriel: “You have been sent to humankind.”

I said, “Perhaps what you hope for will be fulfilled

for you by God; so hope for good, and wait.

Send him to us, so that we may question him

about his affair—what he sees asleep and awake.”

When he came to us, he spoke astonishing words

that made the very skin and hair stand on end:

“I saw God’s trusted messenger confront me

in a form fashioned to perfection among the mightiest forms.

Then he passed on, while fear kept terrifying me,

as the trees around me offered greetings.”

I said, “My belief—though I do not know if he will believe me—

is that he shall be sent, reciting the revealed surahs.

And I shall prove my devotion to you, if you openly summon them,

through jihad, without vaunting or rancor.”
