سبيلٌa way فيشكوso he may lament كلّevery صبّlovesick lover بماof what لقيhe endured
Ah, is there for us, after this parting,
Alas! Is there no way after this separation
a way, so every lovesick lover may lament what they have endured?
That each lover may complain of what he suffers?
وَقدand indeed كنتI used to أوقاتat the times of التزاورِmutual visits فيin الشتاwinter
أبيتُI spend the night علىupon جمرٍembers منof الشوقlonging محرقِscorching
And in winter, when we visited one another, I used to
In the days of union I would pass the dark nights
spend the night upon scorching embers of longing.
Burning with longing upon coals of desire.
فَكيفَso how وقدwhile already أمسيتI have become فيin حالa state of قطعةestrangement
لَقدindeed عجّلhas hastened المقدورfate ماwhat كنتI used to أتّقيI fear
How, then, now that I am in a state of estrangement?
But now in estrangement how can I endure
Fate has indeed hastened what I used to fear.
When fate has hastened what I feared?

وَلاnor الصبرpatience منfrom رقّbondage of التشوّقyearning معتقيmy liberator
The nights pass; I see no end to separation,
The nights pass and I see no end to the separation,
nor does patience free me from the bondage of yearning.
Nor can patience free me from the chains of longing.
سَقىmay water اللَهGod أرضاًa land قدalready غدتhas become لكfor you منزلاًa dwelling
بكلّwith every سكوبcopiously pouring هاطلpouring down الوبلheavy rain مغدقِabundant
May God water the land that has become your dwelling,
May God water a land where you dwell
with every copious downpour of torrential rain.
With heavy downpours and abundant rain.
