ودّعbade farewell to الصبرَpatience محبّa lover ودّعكhe bade you farewell
ودّع الصبرَ محبّ ودّعك
ذائعspread abroad مِنof سرّهhis secret ماwhat اِستودَعكhe entrusted to you
ذائع مِن سرّه ما اِستودَعك
A lover who bade you farewell bade farewell to patience.
A lover bid you farewell and bid farewell
What he entrusted to you of his secret is laid bare.
Of his secret that which he confided in you
يقرعhe gnashes السنّthe tooth علىbecause of أَنthat لمnot يكنhe had
يقرع السنّ على أَن لم يكن
زادَhe added فيto تلكthose الخطىsteps إذwhen شيّعكhe saw you off
زادَ في تلك الخطى إذ شيّعك
He gnashes his teeth, regretting that he had not
Time strikes as if it had never been
Added to those steps when he saw you off.
In those steps as he escorted you
ياO أَخاbrother of البدرِthe full moon سناءeminence وسنىand radiance
يا أَخا البدرِ سناء وسنى
حفظmay preserve اللَهGod زماناًan age أطلَعكit caused you to rise
حفظ اللَه زماناً أطلَعك
O brother of the full moon in eminence and radiance,
O brother of the full moon, glory and splendor
May God preserve the age that brought you to light.
May God preserve a time when it rises upon you
إنif يطُلgrows long بعدكin your absence ليليmy night فلكمthen how often
إن يطُل بعدك ليلي فلكم
بتّI spent the night أشكوI lament قصرَthe shortness الليلof the night مَعكwith you
بتّ أشكو قصرَ الليل مَعك
If my night grows long in your absence, how often
If after you my night grows long, then how much
Have I spent the night with you, lamenting its brevity!
Will I complain of the shortness of night with you
