ولا غرو دأب العلي العلاء

You forsook the earth and sought the sky.

I abandoned the earth and sought the heavens,

No wonder: the lofty one's way is to seek the heights.

It is no wonder, the way of the exalted is sublime.

فإن يرثك الناس في حزنهم

فإن يرثك الناس في حزنهم

فإني لمصر اطيل الرثاء

فإني لمصر اطيل الرثاء

And if people lament you in their sorrow,

If people inherit you in their sorrow,

then I prolong my lament for Egypt.

I will prolong my elegy for Egypt.

بكتك وكم من ذكي بكت

بكتك وكم من ذكي بكت

لقد عودت مصر طول البكاء

لقد عودت مصر طول البكاء

She wept for you—and how many gifted people has she mourned!

Many a brilliant mind wept for you,

Egypt has indeed grown accustomed to long weeping.

Egypt has grown accustomed to weeping.

وكانت تخاف عليك الفناء

وكانت تخاف عليك الفناء

فليست تخاف عليك الفناء

فليست تخاف عليك الفناء

And she once feared your passing away;

She used to fear your demise,

now she no longer fears your passing away.

Now no longer fearing your passing.

وإنك حي بطيب الثناء

وإنك حي بطيب الثناء

كما كنت حيّاّ بطيب الثناء

كما كنت حيّاّ بطيب الثناء

And you live on through fine praise,

For you live on with virtuous praise,

just as you lived through fine praise before.

As you lived with fine acclaim.

على أن في مهج الفاضلين

على أن في مهج الفاضلين

عليك لواعج تأبى الشفاء

عليك لواعج تأبى الشفاء

Yet in the hearts of the virtuous

Yet in the hearts of the noble,

burn pangs of grief for you that refuse to heal.

Are pangs that resist all healing.

هم فقدوا معك زين الشباب

هم فقدوا معك زين الشباب

وهم عدموا معك صدق الإخاء

وهم عدموا معك صدق الإخاء

They lost with you the adornment of youth,

They lost, with you, the beauty of youth,

and with you they lost the sincerity of brotherhood.

And lost, with you, the sincerity of brotherhood.

وفوا لك بالود بعد النوى

وفوا لك بالود بعد النوى

كذاك حزاء الوفي الوفاء

كذاك حزاء الوفي الوفاء

They remained true to you in affection after parting;

They fulfilled, for you, with affection after intent,

such is the faithful one's reward: faithfulness.

Such is the reward of the loyal, loyalty.

فما للمعارف عنك سلو

فما للمعارف عنك سلو

ولا للمعارف فيك عزاء

ولا للمعارف فيك عزاء

So learning cannot forget you,

The acquainted have no consolation from you,

nor does learning find solace for your loss.

Nor solace without you.

رحتك زماناً لأعبائها

رحتك زماناً لأعبائها

فزلت وقد زال ذاك لرجاء

فزلت وقد زال ذاك لرجاء

She looked to you for a time to shoulder her burdens;

She called you for a time, burdened,

then you departed, and that hope vanished.

Then stumbled, and that hope has faded.

تظل تناديك في حزنها

تظل تناديك في حزنها

وهيهات لست تجيب النداء

وهيهات لست تجيب النداء

She keeps calling you in her grief,

She continues calling you in her grief,

but alas, you do not answer the call.

Yet alas! you answer no call.

يعاد ولكن لغير تدان

يعاد ولكن لغير تدان

فراق ولكن بعيد اللقاء

فراق ولكن بعيد اللقاء

Separation, but with no drawing near;

There is reunion, but not for past companions,

a parting, but reunion is far away.

Parting, but far from remeeting.

تجاوزت ملكاً قليل البقاء

تجاوزت ملكاً قليل البقاء

ويممت ملكاً كثير البقاء

ويممت ملكاً كثير البقاء

You passed beyond a short-lived realm,

You transcended a kingdom of brief duration,

and turned toward a realm that long endures.

And aspired to a kingdom of lasting duration.

فمتعك الله فيه بخير

فمتعك الله فيه بخير

قصارى محبيك هذا الدعاء

قصارى محبيك هذا الدعاء

So may God grant you goodness to enjoy there;

May God grant you the best therein

this prayer is all that those who love you can offer.
