    People desire happiness in this world,

    But time refuses to bestow it.

    A life that has fought them since it began,

    And fortune they have fought since they came to be.

    And lean hopes deceive them,

    And fat events give those hopes the lie.

    And how many who seek bounty are given nothing!

    And how many who seek help are not helped!

    Worries have multiplied; no reed pen

    Can do them justice in lament, nor can any tongue.

    Quarter, O hostile adversary!

    When foes submit, quarter must be granted.

    لقد هانت رغائبهم وهانوا

    If they appeal to you, you turn away from them;

    Their wishes have grown worthless indeed, and so have they.

    ألا كذبوا على بعض ومانوا

    People hold out hopes of good to one another;

    Indeed, they have lied to one another and spoken falsely.

    For good has no season in this world,

    Nor does good have a season in the next.

    But youth has its headlong rush,

    For nights [reading uncertain], then balking follows it.

    A firm judgment tightens its reins

    For a time; then the reins grow slack.

    And a caller came inviting me to counsel,

    Though reason had weakened and my fingertips grown feeble.

    I am weary of speaking; nothing is of use

    For spreading counsel—neither verse nor eloquence.

    فها أنا لا أدين ولا أدانُ

    It was a folly, and I turned away from it;

    So here I am: I neither condemn nor am condemned.

    My sorrow is not for an age gone by,

    But that I kept a covenant that no one keeps.

    I wronged its faithful keeper for a long time,

    And I used to think I would not be betrayed.

    And a land where killing never ceases—

    War within her was a festival.

    وناداها فجاوبت السنانُ

    The reed pen called to her, but she did not answer it;

    It hailed her, and she answered the spearpoint.

    Within her, forearms keep on working,

    Driven by blows or spear-thrusts.

    My eye wept for youth; and when dry grew

    Its tears, the heart began to weep.

    By your life, there is no place for one who counsels,

    Nor for counsel is there a place in this world.

    فلي شأن وأهل النصح شان

    So leave me: my hopes have held out their palms to beg;

    For I have my concern, and the counselors have theirs.
