Great indeed is your day among the days, O Umar.

Your day has come in the days, O life,

ويح القلوب التي أسكنتها أزلاً

ويح القلوب التي أسكنتها أزلاً

ماذا عليك من الاحزان تدخر

ماذا عليك من الاحزان تدخر

Alas for the hearts that housed you from eternity!

Woe to the hearts in which you dwelled eternally,

What sorrows they store up over you!

What sorrows do you store to grieve them?

أن تفن منها فما ذكراك فانية

أن تفن منها فما ذكراك فانية

تبقى الهيولى وتفنى وحدها الصور

تبقى الهيولى وتفنى وحدها الصور

If you vanish from them, your memory does not perish.

If you perish from them, your passing is not remembered,

Primal matter remains; forms alone perish.

The elements remain while only forms vanish,

خط الوجود لنا في بعضه خططاً

هي الكنوز ولكن أسمها حفر

هي الكنوز ولكن أسمها حفر

Existence marked out plots for us in a part of itself.

The lines of existence are for us partly traced,

They are treasures, yet they are called pits.

They are treasures but their name is graves,

أن يخل ريع الصبا ينزل مرابعها

أن يخل ريع الصبا ينزل مرابعها

أو يندثر أثر يظهر بها أثر

أو يندثر أثر يظهر بها أثر

If one leaves the hill of youth, one settles in their dwellings.

Should the yield of youth cease to descend in torrents

Or if one trace is effaced, another trace appears there.

Or a trace disappear in which a vestige appears

تجاورت عندها الأحساب فالتحمت

تجاورت عندها الأحساب فالتحمت

أن الورى أسرة في الارض لا أسر

أن الورى أسرة في الارض لا أسر

Noble lineages lay side by side there, then merged.

Accounts gathered around it and merged,

Indeed, humankind is one family in the earth, not many families.

That the world is a family on earth, not individuals,

أن تذو يا غصن مصر في حديقتها

أن تذو يا غصن مصر في حديقتها

فحسبها منك أن قد أينع الثمر

فحسبها منك أن قد أينع الثمر

If you wither, O bough of Egypt, in her garden,

If you O Egypt's branch wither in its garden

Then it is enough for her that your fruit has ripened.

It just suffices it that fruit had ripened,

تنبو الحوادث عن أهرامها قعساً

تنبو الحوادث عن أهرامها قعساً

وليس يأبى على أهرامها الكبر

وليس يأبى على أهرامها الكبر

Calamities rebound from her unyielding pyramids,

Events prophesy against its pyramids silently

Nor does old age hold back from her pyramids.

And grandeur does not prevent its pyramids,

الناطقات لمصر وهي صامتة

الناطقات لمصر وهي صامتة

والشاهدات لمصر وهي تفتخر

والشاهدات لمصر وهي تفتخر

They speak for Egypt while she is silent,

The vocal ones of Egypt while she is silent

And bear witness for Egypt while she boasts.

And the witnesses of Egypt while she prides,

بك النواظر والأفواه في شغل

بك النواظر والأفواه في شغل

كلا الفريقين فيه جمت الدرر

كلا الفريقين فيه جمت الدرر

Eyes and mouths are occupied with you;

With you glances and mouths are busy

In each of the two groups, pearls abound.

Both parties in it combined all treasures,

تسابقت فيك لا تألو عزائمها

تسابقت فيك لا تألو عزائمها

وقصرت فاتتك اليوم تعتذر

وقصرت فاتتك اليوم تعتذر

They vied over you, their resolve never flagging,

They raced regarding you, their resolves indefatigable,

Yet they fell short, so today they came to you apologizing.

They fell short so they apologise to you today,

يثني عليك رجال الفضل ما ذكروا

يثني عليك رجال الفضل ما ذكروا

وتستطيب المعالي كل ما ذكروا

وتستطيب المعالي كل ما ذكروا

Men of merit praise you whenever they speak of you,

Men of merit praise you for what they recalled

And lofty virtues savor all that they recount.

And glories relish whatever they recalled,

تبقى مساعيك فيهم سلوة لهم

تبقى مساعيك فيهم سلوة لهم

يجري الصغار عليها إن هم كبروا

يجري الصغار عليها إن هم كبروا

Your endeavors remain among them, a solace to them;

Your efforts remain solace for them,

The young will follow their path if they grow up.

The young emulate them if they become great,

ما بعد مجدك للآمال مطرح

ما بعد مجدك للآمال مطرح

وليس بعدك في الأمجاد منتظر

وليس بعدك في الأمجاد منتظر

Beyond your glory, hopes have no goal,

No hopes beyond your glory remain,

And after you, nothing more is awaited in glory.

And none awaits glory after you,

لا زال قبرك بالريحان مزدهراً

لا زال قبرك بالريحان مزدهراً

فكل قلب به أسكنت مزدهر

فكل قلب به أسكنت مزدهر

May your grave ever bloom with sweet basil,

Your grave remains fragrant with basil,

For every heart that housed you is in bloom.

So every heart in which you dwelled is fragrant.
