لك الأمر لا تقوى على رده يدي
O my nights, wear away some of my cares and renew them.
Nights that have turned my worries and sorrows white,
Yours is the command; my hand is powerless to resist it.
This matter is beyond my power to change,

What can I hope for, when forty years have slipped away?
Having reached forty, I have no more hope,
There is no life that does not end where it begins.
A life ends where it began.

فلا خاطري باق ولا الشعر مسعدي
I fell silent—a silence whose extent you cannot see;
Silent in a silence, that does not reveal its extent,
for my inspiration is gone, and poetry no longer brings me solace.
My thoughts are no more, nor is poetry my solace,

Nor is any remnant of youth's spirit left in me;
Nothing of the spirit of youth remains in me,
I neither yearn nor feel aggrieved.
I am neither longing, nor finding.

I was misguided to grieve the past, he who lives,
as I have lived neither grieves nor summons fortitude.
As I have lived, does not grieve, nor resort to patience,

عدلت فلم أفتك ولم أتعبد
I remember nothing of it, except that I
I have no thought of it except that I,
acted justly: I neither killed treacherously nor enslaved anyone.
Was fair, I did not sin or worship.

While we live in misery without becoming accustomed.

To be far from enemies and envy.

What can a free person wish for in the shadow of a life
What the free desire in the shadow of life,
that tastes bitter to the free and sweet to slaves?
Passes to the free and is sweet for the enslaved,

You have wearied me, and troubles abound,

My days flow between night and tomorrow.

Is it not yet time for the thirsty one to reach the watering place?
A pain that laments to reach the echoing spring,

I have renounced attaining all lofty honors,
I became ascetic towards attaining any glory,
and whoever seeks them as I have sought them will turn away.
And whoever seeks it like me becomes ascetic.

To my heart, paths became equal,
whether they lead to ease or lead to eminence.
Leading downwards or upwards.

I feel as though in a large well-built palace.

May God pardon those whose treachery came upon me,
May God forgive a people whose betrayal I faced,
for many a wrongdoer has not done wrong deliberately.
Many a wrongdoer did not intend wrong.

How many souls go astray for so long!
and how often, when they see the light, they find their way!
But when they see the light, they are guided.

I withdrew from hopes, returning with despair;
I returned from hopes, weary with despair,
so if longings draw me toward them, I draw away.
If sweet scents draw me to them, I shy away.

So do not tremble towards me with a tortured heart,
nor appear before my sleepless eye.
Nor glance at me with a tearful eye.

It seems the dawn has called you not to sing.

so if you find them sweet for your lament, sing them.
If you find them palatable for your grief, I will recite.

Do not think conventions diminish their beauty,
for many a beautiful thing has come from an imitator.
For many beauties come from imitation.

I forsook wealth, not because I was unable to seek it,
I left wealth, not unable to seek it,
and lowered myself from the stations of my lineage.
But lowered myself from the ranks of the ambitious.

O horizon, record it! O stars bear witness!
