أحسن الله في بنيك العزاء
O dwellings, emptied and left desolate!
O homes that are now empty,
May God grant you good consolation for your sons.
May God comfort your people in their loss.

These nights have accustomed us to sorrow.
Our sorrows have returned these nights,
How often we have mourned, how long prolonged our lament!
How much have we grieved and how long have we lamented.

If the fates do not take pity on your children,
How can we hope it will show poets mercy?
How can we hope they will pity the poets?

All people would complain against Eve.
All people would complain of Eve.

They saw each other, then were enslaved by love, then disappointed;
They saw each other and were afflicted, then failed,
They suffered so that they might teach us suffering.
Wretched, so they would teach us misery.

Then, when it passes, return and bring no suffering.
Then if it passes bring us relief.

Even if you do not like being just.

That have been torn apart in their homes.

Leaves behind a Khansa of his own.
Leaves behind a bereaved woman.

ظن ذاك النحيب منها غناء
Death relished the enemies' wailing;
The enemy rejoiced at their wailing,
He took that wailing of theirs for song.
Thinking it was singing.

The wicked forever feast on flesh and drink only
In the darkness but blood.
Blood from the oppressed.

May God grant tyrants no lasting life!
Not out of God's love for tyrants.

Did we see the virgin's cheek grow pale?
