I cast a glance at her, and she was moved;
And a trace of my glance showed upon her cheeks.

And when passion appeared between us,
I spread a veil of prudence over it, and it was concealed.

And I had almost forgotten my old age, then remembered it,
And checked my soul lest youth return to it.

وينهضنيand raises me شوقيmy longing ويقعدنيand makes me sit الكبرold age
Good fortune withholds her, while wishes give her freely;
And my longing makes me rise, while old age makes me sit.

I see faces in the dwellings of loved ones,
So I seek to lower my eyes, but my gaze outruns me.

It alights on them, gathering beauties from them,
Just as bees gather honey from flowers.

And how many a secret I keep hidden in my glances,
Two betray it: my verse and the eyes' dark beauty.

Gone is the time of pleasure; I feel no bitterness
Over what has passed of it; this is the time for lessons.
فأسكتنيso silenced me ماwhat أسكتsilenced الورقthe gray doves فيin الدجىthe darkness

So what silenced the gray doves in darkness silenced me,
And what gave the doves voice before dawn gave me voice.

Each of us has a listener when the grove echoes:
So my books listen to me, and the trees listen to them.

ولاand no غروwonder لكنbut آفةthe bane of الوردcoming to water فيin الصدرdeparting from it
Hearts have wished that I had entered them—
And no wonder—but the bane of coming to water lies in leaving it.
