How trivial is what brings tears to the weeper's eyes,

If what makes him weep is other than separation from you.

O Egypt, I shall not forget you as long as time endures,

And I think no one among humankind forgets you.

    ألحق وازرني بها وهواك

    By God, twelve years have passed;

Truth and love of you have sustained me through them.

I yearn for my brothers in your midst; only

One devoted to you yearns for one devoted to you.

I once had renown in your land,

Of which neither the Nile nor your two pyramids is unaware.

In days when youth made me speak and made you listen,

And I became your bird when I came to behold you.

And if God decrees reunion with you after this,

Then I shall surely rub my face with some of your dust.

Time knew its hatred did not humble me,

So it strove to abase me through your disdain.

And if I have lived apart from you, it is only

For my hopes of meeting you that I live.

And I deem great calamities small,

And I behold my destruction without fearing my destruction.

And the blades' desertion of me increased my

Resolve, so my struggle with Time grew earnest.

My torments grew, so I grew more rapturous,

And others complained; I faulted the complainer's anguish.

If those who fastened my shackles tried

One day to free me, I would not accept my release.

Wondrous Time has gladdened you and grieved me,

So you laughed, and I alone spent the night weeping.

    يا ليت ألهاني كما ألهاك

    In my absence, it distracted you with fresh hopes;

Oh, if only it had distracted me as it distracted you!

    لو كنتُ حاضر أمرهم لكفاك

    And poets turned their many arts to you and excelled;

Had I been present at their endeavor, that would have sufficed you.

Whenever a thought is renewed, there comes to you from me

Verse through which love of you all but flutters.

If this voice has grown hoarse with age,

How often in its youth it sang to you!

Or if the reed pen has become blunted,

Then it will be sharpened; even its stillness is motion.

O throne of the sun's offspring in their exalted glory,

Vie in height with the stars in heaven, and match them.

Is there in all creation a watering place like your Nile?

Or in all creation any hills like your hills?

You are the one who, since Manawus, has been befriended by

The brave man's heart and the bloodshedder's pretext.

    إيزس أمك أوزريس أباك

    فليطلبوه هناك في الأفلاك

    By God, your equal on earth has eluded them;

So let them seek it there, among the celestial spheres.
