فترحع آمال وتقوى عزائم
Has the time not come for Time to restore what has passed,
The time that's passed will not come back again
so that hopes return and resolves grow strong?
No hopes revived, no courage will remain

I nearly forbade my soul what it desires
I almost stopped advising stubborn souls
of counsel, were it not for what the turbans [bring about].
If not for he who dons the turban's train

فإن سالمت حيناً فختلا تسالمُ
And the days have never ceased to be at war with reason;
The days wear on, war 'gainst my pleas they wage
if they make peace for a while, they make peace deceitfully.
If peace should come, it will not long remain

I see people passionately enamored of greatness;
I see the youth pursuing lofty goals
and no wonder: I too am thus enamored.
No wonder I, like them, hopes entertain

And these are traits whose uprooting cannot [be hoped for],
Ingrained whims they hold, hard to extract
bound to a people when malicious gossip is bound to them.
Not helped by men who raise the flags in vain

God’s lands will go on seeking a reformer,
God's lands will ever seek one who reforms
but never will the keen-edged swords consent to that.
But not be pleased by men of sword and fang
