أنهاthat she لاnot تطيقcan bear عنيaway from me بعاداseparation
أنها لا تطيق عني بعادا
Has she found my absence pleasant—though I long thought
She found pleasure after me, though long have I been gone,
that she could not bear separation from me—
That she cannot bear to be far from me.
واستنابتand she substituted عنin place of الخليلthe beloved خليلاًa beloved
واستنابت عن الخليل خليلاً
واستعاضتand she took in exchange منfor الودادthe love وداداlove
واستعاضت من الوداد ودادا
and put another beloved in her beloved’s place,
And she took a friend instead of the beloved,
and exchanged one love for another?
And replaced affection with affection.

أم أضاعت في البعد ذاك الفؤادا
I wish I knew: does that heart remain,
I wonder if that heart still remains,
or has she lost that heart in separation?
Or if in the distance she lost that heart.

Or is this her habit—to love and forget?
Or if that is her habit, to love and forget,
Or does she hurt people out of hatred for people?
Or if out of spite for mankind, she hurts mankind.
