Do not remind me, for recollection brings back to me
Do not remind me, for remembrance returns to me,
The ways of my longing in my earliest days.
Habits I found in my early days,

And treat me with despair of you—it will do me good.
And cure me with despair from you that benefits me,
Healing through despair makes one forget the sickness caused by hope.
Recovery with despair makes sickness forget hope,

Estrangement has grown sweet; let its allotment not grieve you.
Parting was good, so do not grieve over its destiny,
If you have grown weary, what makes you complain of my weariness?
If you are bored, what makes you complain of my boredom,

For one weary of love, when it ends, there is a substitute
The companion of love, does he not move on and change?
For it; but for one who cherishes love there is none.
And the shepherd of love has no alternative,

Let the nights of my homelands demand of me
Leave the nights of my homelands that blame me,
Their due; do not busy my soul with idle concerns.
So do not busy my soul without work,

And wipe away the tears; these tears bewitch me.
And restrain your tears, these tears tempt me,
The most poignant laments, to me, are tears from the eyes.
The most bitter complaints to me are the tears of the oppressed,

They are pearls floating in the eye sockets; they do not
They are the pearls that float in the eyelids, they only choose kohl as a place to swim,
Choose to swim anywhere but where kohl is laid.
If I were not a poet, I would have become jealous,

Had I not been a poet, I would have become envious;
The pearls of tears, from them the pearls of poetry
For from the pearls of tears come the pearls of love verse.
