O Khayri's soul, now that departure is at hand,

Pause a little—a little is enough for us.

    Death has severed the bond between us;

Nothing remains of it but lasting sorrow.

As for the pledges you made firm,

They stand as you made them, never passing away.

And the grieving one's recourse in his grief

Is tears—yet some tears refuse to flow.

In God's keeping is youth now gone,

Like the morning star overtaken by setting.

And an ambition that towered above the rest,

Which, but for death, would not have tired of rising higher.

And an array of virtues like the flowers of the hills,

For everything in them is gentle and beautiful.

    والنبل طبع ثابت في النبيل

    And an inherited dignity of character;

And nobility is an enduring trait in the noble.

O face of Khayri, can the earth alter

Your cheerful glow? No indeed, it will not change.

You are exalted, despite the earth's decree,

And death does not debase the worth of the exalted.

And surely among the most painful things in grief

Are long separation, then the severing of the way.

May God grant you delight in His gardens,

And enough for your brothers is the burden of burning grief.
