قدindeed ذلhave been humbled اهلthe people of الهوىlove ياO ربLord ماwhat صنعواthey have done
Beauty rises through her as high as it may, while I sink low.
Beauty rises in her, and rises though humbled.
Lovers have been humbled; O Lord, what have they done?
The lovers have been abased, my Lord, by what they did.
اسعىI strive لأرضيهاto please her والسعيand the striving يغضبهاangers her
فشرعةso the law of الهجرestrangement فيin الحالينboth cases ليfor me شرعprescribed law
I strive to please her, but my striving angers her.
I strive to please her, but striving angers her.
So, in either case, estrangement is the law laid down for me.
So estrangement is my law, in both cases, a law for me.
حبa love سأتضيI shall pay (uncertain reading) لهfor it بالدمعwith tears واجبهits due
لوeven if كنتI were عيناًan eye فيهfor it أدمعI shed tears
A love whose due I shall pay with tears—
With tears I must fulfill love's duty to her.
Impossible—even were I an eye shedding tears for it!
Alas, if my eyes were a well, they would not suffice.
ياO نازعينyou who depart ووجديand my longing غيرnot منتزعtorn away
باللهby God عودواreturn فقدfor indeed جارhave been unjust الألىthose who نزعواthey departed
O you who depart, while my longing is not torn away,
O you who struggle with me, my inner self will not be wrested away!
By God, return, for those who departed have been unjust.
For God's sake, return! My intimate ones have been torn away.
لاdo not تستذلواhumiliate عزيزاًa man of honor منfrom بنيthe sons of يكنYakan
آباؤهhis forefathers أخضعواthey subdued الدنياthe world وماand did not خضعواthey bowed
Do not humiliate a man of honor from the house of Yakan.
Do not humiliate one dear to the family of Ya-Kan!
His forefathers subdued the world, yet never bowed.
His forefathers subdued the world but were not subdued.
لمdid not ينقطعcease فيin الهوىlove عنيfrom me البكاءweeping لكمfor you
ليسdoes not البكاءweeping عنfrom الولهانthe love-distraught one ينقطعcease
My weeping for you in love has never ceased.
For you all, weeping for love of you does not cease.
Weeping does not cease for one distraught with love.
Weeping for passion never ceases.
أظلI keep أنشدI chant للأفلاكto the celestial spheres مظلمتيmy grievance
والدهرand Time يرثىfeels pity لهاfor it واللهand God يستمعlistens
I keep chanting my grievance to the celestial spheres.
I remain reciting my darkness to the heavenly spheres,
And Time pities it, and God listens.
While fate weeps for it, and God listens.
إنيindeed I اخترعتI invented المعانيpoetic conceits فيabout محاسنكمyour charms
كذاكlikewise أهلthe people of الهوىlove منfrom قبليbefore me اخترعواthey invented
Indeed, I have invented poetic conceits about your charms.
I have invented meanings in your perfections.
So too did lovers before me invent them.
Thus, before me, have lovers invented.
فلاso not سكتI fell silent علىthrough عجزincapacity كمنlike those who سكتواthey fell silent
ولاnor سجعتI rhymed بمطروقon well-worn themes كمنlike those who سجعواthey rhymed
So I did not fall silent from incapacity like those who fell silent,
So I was not silent in frustration like those who were silent,
Nor did I rhyme on well-worn themes like those who rhymed.
Nor did I seek mere rhyme like those who sought rhyme.

أظلI keep أتبعهاI follow it with نوحيmy lament فيتبعso it follows
And this is one of thought's remaining fragments:
And this is one remnant of thought I still pursue,
I keep sending my lament after it, and so it follows.
Crying out, which my intuition pursues.
ماnot زلتI ceased أتبعI follow قلبيmy heart فيin رضائكمyour approval
حتىuntil استحالit changed وقدand already أودىbrought ruin بهupon it الطمعdesire
I kept following my heart in seeking to please you,
I have never ceased following my heart to please you,
Until it changed, and desire had brought it to ruin.
Until it was exhausted, undone by longing.
كذاكthus يصدعit shatters قلباًa heart يأيهcries out (uncertain reading) أسفاًin sorrow
إنindeed القلوبhearts بطولthrough the prolonging of اليأسdespair تنصدعcrack apart
Thus it shatters a heart that cries out in sorrow.
Thus a heart cries out in sorrow, split open.
Indeed, hearts crack under prolonged despair.
Hearts crack open from prolonging despair.
