A caliphate from which its caliphs have passed away—
A caliphate whose caliphs have departed,
of the House of Osman, those who reigned and those who built it high.
Of the House of Osman—those who ruled and those who built.

They left glory within it to the generations after them,
They left glory within it for the generations after them,
and glory is preserved for later generations by illustrious men.

Until it passed to a prince, in his despotic sway,
Until it passed to a ruler under whose tyranny
whose hallmarks even ʿĀd and Shaddād would fear.
ʿĀd and Shaddād fear his injustices.

Woe to us! We mourn only a homeland of our own,
Alas for us! We weep only for a homeland of ours,
for which, beneath the earth, fathers and forefathers weep.
For which fathers and forefathers weep in the dust.
