مَحلَبَهُ الأَوفَرَ قَد أُترِعا
If only Hisham had lived long enough to see
If only Hisham had lived to see
his fuller milking vessel filled to the brim.
His most capacious milking pail filled to the brim.
كِلناwe measured out لَهُfor him بِالصاعِwith the saʿ measure إِذsince كالَهاhe measured it out
كِلنا لَهُ بِالصاعِ إِذ كالَها

وَما ظَلَمناهُ بِها أَوَعا
We measured it out to him by the sāʿ, as he had measured it out;
We measured out for him by the saʿ, as he had measured it,
nor did we wrong him with a measure more capacious.
And we did not wrong him thereby—did he understand? [Reading uncertain.]
وَماand not أَتَيناwe did ذاكَthat عَنon the basis of بِدعَةٍan innovation

أَحَلَّهُ القُرآنُ لي أَجمَعا
Nor did we do that as some innovation:
Nor did we do that on the basis of an innovation;
the Qur’an made it wholly lawful for me.
The Qur'an made it all lawful for me.
